Final turbine up at SSE’s highest wind farm

All 33 turbines at the site, located approximately 25km south of Inverness on the Dunmaglass Estate, are now standing tall and the project is moving into the commissioning and testing phase ahead of generating electricity for the National Grid.

Located on a natural plateau at an average of 700m above sea level, Dunmaglass is SSE’s highest wind farm to be constructed. The site is an ideal location for a wind farm but its altitude has caused several challenges with the weather during the construction phase making this weeks achievement all the more rewarding for the Dunmaglass project team.

Jamie Meneely, Dunmaglass Project Manager said: “We have been working on this project since 2013 and the team is delighted to have got the final turbine erected. At this altitude there has been a lot of weather related challenges, but we got through them safely and it’s great to  see all the turbines finally in position. The team will continue to work hard over the coming months to complete the wind  farm for Spring 2017.”

Dunmaglass has three operational turbines which have already started exporting electricity. The number of operational turbines will increase over the coming weeks as final commissioning and testing phase of the project is carried out. Once complete next spring the site will generate up to 94.05MW of clean renewable energy to the National Grid.
