REpower’s first wind power projects in the Canadian province of Ontario. REpower Systems AG (WKN 617703) has signed two contracts for Canadian wind energy projects. The two orders cover the delivery, installation and maintenance of 55 REpower MM92 CCV wind turbines specifically designed for cold climates.

A total of 40 wind turbines are destined for the Saint-Robert-Bellarmin wind farm located between the cities of Lac-Mégantic and Saint-Georges-de-Beauce in the Canadian province of Quebec. The other 15 wind turbines are to be installed at the Ganaraska and Whispering Woods wind farms situated in the Oshawa region (Ontario). It is the first time that REpower constructs wind farms in the Canadian province of Ontario.

The Saint-Robert-Bellarmin wind power project – with a total rated output of 80 megawatts (MW) – marks the second call from a framework agreement that REpower signed with EDF Energies Nouvelles Canada Inc. in November 2009. Construction of Saint-Robert-Bellarmin is set to start as early as summer 2011. Saint-Robert-Bellarmin wind farm is one of the projects chosen at the outset of a public invitation to tender launched by Hydro-Québec for the installation of 2,000 MW of wind energy. In accordance with the tender conditions of Hydro-Québec, REpower will generate at least 30% of the added value with the wind turbines in the Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine region and the Matane regional county municipality.

The contracts for the Ganaraska and Whispering Woods wind farms were concluded with the wind energy company Wind Works Power Corp. Together the wind farms will generate a total of 30 MW of installed power. For the construction of Ganaraska and Whispering Woods, REpower will cooperate with local companies supplying towers, blades and converters.

Andreas Nauen, CEO of REpower Systems AG, commented: “Our cold-climate version of the REpower MM series perfectly suits the conditions we found at Canadian wind farm sites. We are looking forward to carrying out further projects in this market which has great potential for us.” He is pleased that REpower is also contributing to the sustainable development of the regions: “Our local suppliers, e.g. for towers, blades and converters, will also benefit from these projects.”
