Mexico - Sempra Energy imports wind energy
The wind farm will be capable of producing enough clean electricity to power about 65,000 average homes. The companies now are working on a joint development agreement for the wind turbines project.
Wind power in Mexico - Sempra Energy to import wind energy from Mexico
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) announced that it has entered into a 20-year contract for up to 156 megawatts (MW) of renewable power supplied from the first phase of Energía Sierra Juárez wind farm in Baja California, Mexico. Both SDG&E and Sempra Generation are subsidiaries of Sempra Energy.
SDG&E selected Energía Sierra Juárez as part of the utility's 2009 competitive solicitation for renewable resources. Construction on Energía Sierra Juárez 1 wind farm, located about 70 miles east of San Diego and just south of the U.S.-Mexico border, is expected to begin in 2012.
When completed in 2013, the wind farm will be capable of producing enough clean electricity to power about 65,000 average homes. Energía Sierra Juárez has been under development by Sempra Generation since 2007 and could produce up to 1,200 MW of wind power at full build-out.
Energia Sierra Juarez is a wind farm development that is to be located along the Sierra Juárez mountains on the Baja peninsula. The first phase will be located in the Ejido Jacumé north of the town of La Rumorosa, about 70 miles east of San Diego and across the U.S.-Mexico border.
Sempra said construction is now expected to commence sometime next year, with completion slated for sometime in 2013. Long terms plans for the development indicate that the facility could one day produce as much as 1,200 megawatts.
Sempra Generation also announced that it reached preliminary agreement last year on the framework for the sale of a 50-percent partnership interest in Energía Sierra Juárez to BP Wind Energy. The companies now are working on a joint development agreement for the wind turbines project. Energía Sierra Juárez will connect to the existing California electric grid at SDG&E's proposed ECO substation in eastern San Diego County via a new cross-border transmission tie-line.
