Statkraft begins construction on 58MW Offaly wind farm

Statkraft has confirmed that it recently began construction on Moanvane Wind Farm, located in Co. Offaly, representing an investment of €86 million by the company.

Moanvane Wind Farm is a 12 turbine, 57.6MW project that will deliver a significant amount of renewable energy on to the grid at a time when secure, sustainable energy is urgently needed.

Statkraft will fund and manage the construction of the wind farm and will operate it when complete. As part of the project, a 6km amenity trail will also be developed, offering additional opportunities for biodiversity enhancement in the area.?

Speaking about the project, Kevin O’Donovan, MD of Statkraft Ireland said, “In light of the current energy and climate crisis, projects like Moanvane Wind Farm have a huge amount to offer the country and the local community. Not only will it contribute to Ireland’s important transition to renewable energy, but it will also bring significant local benefits such as the 6km amenity trail. This was an idea that the local community came to us with, and we were happy to develop it as part of the project.”

Donal O’Sullivan, Head of Development with Statkraft Ireland added, “This project carries with it a significant community benefit fund in excess of €300,000 per year, which will support the sustainability of the local area, as well as providing direct return for local households. From the outset of the development process, we engaged pro-actively with the local community and ensured their feedback was taken into consideration throughout. We are looking forward to continuing that positive engagement with the local community as the project moves into construction phase.”?

Moanvane was granted planning permission in 2018 and it is envisaged than it will be operational in 2024.

Statkraft entered the Irish market in 2018 and since then has more than doubled its workforce and tripled its development portfolio. It develops, owns, and operates renewable energy projects across the technologies of onshore wind, offshore wind, solar, battery storage and grid services.?
