Wind Industry Profile of

Chinese unveil world's largest hybrid-drive offshore wind turbine

MingYang Smart Energy has unveiled the MySE 16.0-242 turbine, designed to operate in high wind IEC IB, including typhoon class IEC TC.

The turbine has a nameplate capacity of 16 MW, a 242 m diameter rotor, 118 m long blades and a swept area of 46,000 square metres, equivalent to more than six football fields. A single MySE 16.0-242 turbine can generate 80,000 MWh of electricity each year, enough to power more than 20,000 homes. In comparison, it generates 45% more energy than MingYang's previous model, the MySE 11.0-203. The MySE 16.0-242 is an extension of the company's proven compact design and hybrid drive concept. With a nacelle weight of less than 37 tonnes per MW, Ming Yang is also setting new standards here.

According to the company, such a turbine can save more than 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions in its 25-year lifetime, making an important contribution to the goal of carbon neutrality.

“The launch of our new largest wind turbine, MySE 16.0-242, is an apt illustration of the three essential drivers to technology evolution – demand, combinationand iteration,” says Qiying Zhang, President and CTO of Ming Yang Smart Energy, who continues: “In response to demand for anti-typhoon wind turbines in coastal Guangdong, MingYang systematically develops high-quality products by collaborating with global supply chain partners and integrating cutting-edge technologies from industries such as aerospace, materials, and big data.”

The MySE 16.0-242 was recently certified by DNV and the China General Certification Center (CGC) for its design and is expected to enter prototype production next year. Commercial production is currently expected in the first half of 2024.

Key data of the MySE 16.0-242 wind turbine:

  • Rated power: 16MW
  • Height: 264m
  • Blade length: 118m
  • Rotor diameter: 242m
  • Annual energy production (AEP): 45% more than the predecessor model MySE 11.0-203 and 80 million kWh - enough to power more than 20000 households
  • Environmental benefit: 1.6 million tonnes less CO2 emissions per turbine in 25 years of operation compared to coal-fired power generation
