Global Power Industry Contracts in Q2 2019: Wind Technology a Flat Growth

Wind technology contracts activity in Q2 2019 saw 236 contracts announced, marking a flat growth over the last four-quarter average of 237, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Onshore was the top category in wind technology in terms of number of contracts for the quarter, accounting for 173 contracts and a 73.3% share, followed by Offshore with 57 contracts and a 24.2% share. Onshore Repowered stood in third place with six contracts and a 2.5% share.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, wind held the second position in terms of number of contracts during Q2 2019 with a 34.5% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Wind technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 79 contracts and a 33.5% share
  2. Project Implementation: 68 contracts and a 28.8% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 49 contracts and a 20.8% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 17 contracts and a 7.2% share
  5. Consulting & Similar Services: 12 contracts and a 5.1% share
  6. Electricity Supply: 11 contracts and a 4.7% share.

Europe leads wind contracts activity in Q2 2019

Comparing contracts activity in wind technology in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 118 contracts and a share of 50% during Q2 2019, followed by North America with 52 contracts and a 22% share and Asia-Pacific with 47 contracts and a 19.9% share.

In fourth place was South and Central America with 15 contracts and a 6.4% share and in fifth place was Middle East and Africa with four contracts and a 1.7% share.

Wind technology contracts in Q2 2019: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Wind technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (United States): 1,100MW from one contract
  2. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 1,080MW from five contracts
  3. Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Turkey (Turkey): 1,000MW capacity from two contracts.

Wind technology contracts in Q2 2019: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 2,410MW from five contracts
  2. Orsted US Offshore Wind (United States) and Dongfang Electric Wind Power Co., (China): 1,100MW from one contract
  3. Orsted (Denmark): 900MW capacity from one contract.
