Kriegers Flak turbines to be shipped from Rønne Harbour
The construction of Denmark's largest wind farm, Kriegers Flak, will start by 2020. And now the port of shipment is found. It will be Rønne Havn, with its location on Bornholm in the middle of the Baltic Sea, central to the great operation. In connection with the large project, the port area is expanded with 150,000 square meters.
"We are very pleased with our choice of Port of Rønne. It is well placed for activities in the Baltic Sea. It is a new dock when we start using it in two years and it is extremely strong in its construction. This means that the components can come close to the quayside, and we need that. The elements that we ship are weighing over 400 tons, so it's a big load. The entrance and exit conditions of the harbour are good, connections with domestic flights from Copenhagen, Karup or Billund to Bornholm are very nice and the combination of the Øresund Bridge and the Ystad express ferry is a strong option. That the harbour is on an island is no problem, because our components are too big for land transport anyway, so sailing is preferable during transport. Finally, it is an advantage for us that it is a Danish port - it reduces paperwork in relation to if, for example, we were to ship from a German Baltic Sea port. In conclusion there are a lot of benefits," explains Bent Rasmussen, project manager at Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy.
He continues: "Equally important, from the very start, we have met a very positive and constructive attitude from Rønne Harbour. They want to be active players in solving challenges and creating the best conditions for us. It has been a great collaboration. It's a big operation we come with that requires a lot – in terms of the harbour, of course, but also in relation to the local environment in terms of hotels, restaurants etc. Here it has been really nice to work with the people of the harbour. "
Happy Harbour Director
The CEO of Rønne Harbour, Thomas Bendtsen is also excited about the agreement. "These are the kind of projects that can provide a lot of life on the quayside in Rønne. We have been focused on extensions of our port areas and aimed at the facilities being modern and able to handle as large an operation as the one Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy is going to launch. I hope and believe that it will be the start of a lot of other good business projects in our port area. "
Bornholm's mayor Winni Grosbøll, sees it as an important and positive extension of Bornholm's image. "Bornholm is known as tourist island, and every year there are well over half a million people to spend not least summer holidays here. In recent years, we have also become known for the public meeting Folkemødet. But Bornholm is so much more than that, and I'm glad that the business aspect of the island now stands out clearly. We can build on a century old maritime tradition and with the new harbour area take a very modern approach. It is a first-class commercial port we are building, and I am pleased that it will be used immediately after construction. "
About Kriegers Flak:
Kriegers Flak will be Denmarks largest offshore wind farm project. The 604,8 MW offshore wind farm will act like a 'Supergrid', transmitting renewable energy through power grids to Denmark, Sweden and Germany. The Kriegers Flak turbines will be shipped from Rønne Harbour. It will be build in waters close to the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.The wind farm is planned to go into operation in 2020.
The expansion of the first phase of the harbour is finished in october 2019: Rønne Harbour is setting up a new 1150 meter external wave breaker, a multi-purpose terminal, which has a 300 meter length, a 40 meter wide heavy duty ro-ro rental, heavy duty-quay at 200 meters, and a 150,000 square meter large area. In addition the water depth increases to 11 meters.
This means that, the harbour offers much greater opportunity to position Bornholm as a service- and installation base in connection with the development of the planned tasks of the wind fields in the Baltic Sea.
