All done for Phase one

Phase one of the two-phase, 169MW Galway Wind Park project has been officially completed and is now fully operational.

Officially named Comhlacht Gaoithe Teoranta (CGT), phase one consists of 22 turbines and has a total export capacity of 66MW. The project was in construction for two and a half years, with main works first beginning in December 2014.

James O’Hara, SSE’s Project Manager for Galway Wind Park, said: “This is a huge achievement for our project team, and it comes after years of hard work from everyone involved. Phase one is an impressive wind farm in its own right, and its completion is a major milestone in the context of the overall Galway Wind Park project.

"As you would expect from a project of this scale and significance, it has involved a great team effort and I would like to thank and congratulate everyone who has played a part. I would also like to say a big thank you to the local community for their cooperation during the construction of the first phase, and for their ongoing support as we continue construction on phase two with our project partners Coillte."

Phase one of Galway Wind Park is wholly-owned by SSE, while phase two is a 50/50 joint venture between SSE and forestry company Coillte. Work is ongoing on phase two and is due to be completed later this year. At that point, Galway Wind Park will be Ireland’s largest onshore wind farm, helping to offset around 190,000 tCO2 emissions in one year, while providing clean, green energy to almost 80% of the homes in Co. Galway.
