Technical co-operation between University of São Paolo and BBB

Development of a test site for LiDAR wind measurement technology in Brazil

Professor Ildo Sauer, director of the Institute of Energy and Environment (IEE) at the University of São Paulo, and Klaus Bergmann, managing director of BBB Umwelttechnik GmbH (BBB), have documented their intention to jointly develop a test site for the verification of LiDAR wind measurement data in Brazil.

Prof. Sauer, formerly director of the state-owned Brazilian oil & gas company Petrobras, has great reputation in the Brazilian academia. He participated as a consultant in the restructuration processes of the energy sector and is known as one of the strongest promoters of renewable energies in Brazil.

The agreement is connected to the plan of IEE to build up a wind energy research center. The aims expressed in the jointly signed letter of intent is the research on the laser-based measurement technology, its market introduction in Brazil and the further development of the technology itself for wind energy purposes.

The practical experience BBB has already gained with this rather new, but among experts widely recognized technology, will be fundamental to plan and implement the test site in accordance to the norms. Furthermore, BBB’s wind resource experts will transfer their knowledge to students and researchers and participate in research and development pro-jects.

BBB intents to expand its activities on the South American continent and expects to gain increased awareness in the Brazilian wind industry. The high acknowledgement of German engineering in Brazil is supposed to help to establish standards for the determination of wind resources following the German model and to achieve a breakthrough for LiDAR wind measurement technology.

Brazil is one of the most promising wind energy markets in the world. Due to its economic growth in the recent years and the natural re-sources, wind energy stands in the focus of the governmental plans to increase renewable energy generation. Actually, approximately 3.4 GW nominal wind power is installed in Brazil, the national energy plan defines the aim of 16 GW installed capacity until 2021.
