Wind Industry Profile of

Siemens receives its largest-ever onshore wind order from the U.S.

Siemens has received its largest onshore wind order to date. The purchaser is the US utility MidAmerican Energy headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa. Siemens will deliver a total of 258 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 2.3 megawatts (MW) for several wind farms in Iowa. After commissioning in January 2012, the combined capacity of 593 MW will be sufficient to supply 190,000 U.S. households with clean electricity.

"Siemens is already world market leader for offshore wind power,” said René Umlauft, CEO of the Siemens Renewable Energy Division. "We are now also highly successful with onshore wind turbines. Only recently, we signed a framework agreement with Enel Green Power to deliver up to 260 wind turbines for a number of wind farms in Europe. Our largest onshore order to date from the U.S. demonstrates that we are well on track to becoming one of the three leading suppliers of wind turbines by 2012,” Umlauft added.

Wind turbines are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2010, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about EUR28 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of ecofriendly technologies. In the same period, our products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 270 million tons, an amount equal to the total annual CO2 emissions of the megacities Hong Kong, London, New York, Tokyo, Delhi and Singapore.
