Siemens finalizes largest wind turbine order in Ontario

Wolfe Island project will supply clean energy for 75,000 households

Siemens Canada Limited today announced it has been awarded its largest wind turbine project in Canada, one of the fastest growing wind markets in the world, for the supply of 86 wind turbines to the Wolfe Island Wind Project. Canadian Hydro Developers, Inc., through its wholly owned subsidiary Canadian Renewable Energy Corporation, is the developer, owner and operator of this project. The wind plant will be located on Wolfe Island, near Kingston, Ontario, Canada, with an installed capacity of nearly 200 megawatts (MW). The turbines have the potential to meet the electricity demand of nearly 75,000 households per year. The project is scheduled to be operational in fall 2008.

Siemens will supply the 86 SWT-2.3-93 wind turbines with a capacity of 2.3 MW each, including two years of service and maintenance support. The Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution Group will also supply two transformers to the project.

The Canadian wind power market is expected to see unprecedented growth over the next decade. “Canada’s installed wind energy capacity grew by 113% in 2006. Out of the current installed capacity of 1,535 MW, 776 MW were installed in 2006 alone,” stated Guenther Scholz, president and CEO of Siemens Canada Limited. “Canada is an important, growing wind power market and we are pleased that Canadian Hydro Developers selected Siemens to help provide clean power to the citizens of Ontario.” This order will play a part in the tremendous growth anticipated and marks the second significant contract for Siemens in the Canadian wind market.

“This is a key project for Canadian Hydro and we are pleased to have selected Siemens as our supplier,” said Ross Keating, president operations & development of Canadian Hydro. “Siemens has a strong commitment to the Canadian energy market, and is a world-leader in wind technology. Together, our two organizations will design and construct the Wolfe Island Wind Project in line with current best practices. We believe that the wind plant will become a source of pride for the Wolfe Island and Kingston communities.”

“Wind energy is an important part of Siemens’ strategy that addresses both energy security and climate change,” added Scholz. “Siemens is a leader in climate-protection technologies. Our comprehensive portfolio in power generation, distribution and industrial applications includes highly effective measures to reduce CO2 emissions. Industry and governments must join forces to combat climate change.”
