Russia - Spanish power company to build wind farm in Russia
Spanish electricity company Iberdrola Renovables will invest $140 million in the construction of a wind farm in south Russia's Krasnodar Territory, the local administration said. The turbines, with output capacity of 1,000 MW, are expected to be built in the region's resort cities on the Black Sea coast by 2011, the administration's press service said. "The Krasnodar Territory is interested in the construction of as many environmentally friendly power stations in the region as possible. There is nothing more environmentally friendly than wind power," the statement said.
To date, the region produces less than 40% of the electric power it consumes. Regional authorities said the wind power project will allow the Krasnodar Territory to bring this figure up to 60%. The resort city of Sochi, in the Krasnodar Territory, is set to host the Winter Olympics in 2014.
