Hitachi Withdraws from Wind Turbine Production
In the future, Hitachi will continue to maintain the wind turbines built to date, but will no longer produce any new ones. A factory in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, has already stopped accepting new orders for turbines, a company official told the Nikkei Asian Review. Instead, Hitachi will purchase turbines from its German partner Enercon and concentrate on offering optimal solutions for controlling the electrical power supply.
After massive losses in sales in recent months, the conmpany is in the process of restructuring its divisions in order to return to profitability. In December, Hitachi acquired ABB's power grid business to strengthen its competitiveness in the power transmission business against competitors, including GE and Siemens, and to further expand this segment.
Just two weeks ago, Hitachi withdrew from the construction of a planned nuclear power plant in the UK because the costs for the construction had risen massively.
