Enercon recently installed what is currently the world’s most powerful wind turbine at their wind farm site in Magdeburg-Rothensee. The 7.5 Megawatt E-126 launched on 27th January is expected to yield an annual output of 14 million kWh.

The Enercon E-126 is the largest turbine model build to date. With a hub height of 135 m (443 ft), rotor diameter of 126 m (413 ft) and a total height of 198 m (650 ft), this large model can generate up to 7 Megawatts of power per turbine. The nameplate capacity was changed from 6 MW to 7 MW after technical revisions were performed in 2009. Enercon now aims to further increase this capacity to 7.5 MW.

The weight of the foundation of the turbine tower is about 2.500 t, the tower itself 2.800 t, the machine housing 128 t, the generator 220 t, the rotor (including the blade) 364 t. The total weight is about 6.000 t.

The E-126 is proof that wind turbines have now reached power plant capacities, says Enercon Managing Director, Dr. Aloys Wobben. The machine is expected to provide enough clean energy for up to 15,000 people in the Magdeburg area. This wind turbine, operated by ENERCON Windpark Rothensee GmbH & Co. KG, is a joint venture with minority shareholder (24%) SWM (Städtische Werke Magdeburg) who are now offering their customers locally produced wind power electricity.

In addition to this joint wind power project, Enercon, SWM and Magdeburger Hafen GmbH have signed an agreement aimed at turning Magdeburg’s inland harbour into a Greenport. ENERCON’s recently installed state-of-the-art WEC will be providing the port facilities and river barges anchored there with wind energy. A special hybrid shunter will also be employed to shift rolling stock on the harbour premises. Furthermore, SWM is also planning on opening up a charging station for electric vehicles near Magdeburger Hafen GmbH.
