Dr. Wolfgang J. Schmitz is the new COO wind energy technology onshore/ mechanical engineering

At 15th June 2010 Dr. Wolfgang Schmitz took over the position as new COO Wind Energy Technology / Mechanical Engineering of SIAG Schaaf Industrie AG.

In the recent two years the SIAG-group has continuously pursued and successfully implemented its expansion strategy. For 14 years SIAG is active in the steel industry and has developed to the leading supplier of steel components for the energy industry.

Two facilities in the US and Egypt were added to the group to expand the corporate division wind energy technology onshore.

Moreover, the new business unit maritime systems / offshore was established with the transformation of Nordseewerke Emden to Europe’s largest facility for offshore and maritime technology for offshore and maritime technology – SIAG Nordseewerke GmbH. To consolidate this success and
strengthen this development, both divisions will be subordinated to an own director.

As the new COO, Dr. Wolfgang Schmitz has the full business responsibility for the division wind energy technology onshore. With more than 15 years of experience with executive positions in internationally active companies in about 7 countries - including the USA and Canada – and due to his broad experience and skills he is well prepared for his new position.

“I am really looking forward to my new tasks at SIAG Schaaf Industrie AG. The development of the recent years is amazing. The wind energy branch is a very young industry with a worldwide potential which we still expect to grow” says Dr. Schmitz.

For eight years he worked as a consultant at Fraunhofer Institute in Munich, Aachen and Boston. Soon after his graduation he turned to the branch of industry and started working as production manager and person responsible for the business unit “industrial parts” at SUSPA HOLDING AG in Nuremberg, a company producing gas springs as well as hydraulic and vibration dampers. After a short time he also took over the position as Managing Director of SUSPA Sales GmbH. From 1999 until his work at SIAG Schaaf Industrie AG Dr. Schmitz worked for the current RIO TINTO PLC as Managing Director for different subsidiaries in Germany, Canada and Switzerland until the last.
