E.ON and SSB Service, GmbH enter cooperation agreement Independent WTG service provider to maintain E.ON Vestas 2MW turbines

As of April 2010, the independent WTG service provider SSB Service, GmbH will gradually take over the repair, maintenance, and remote monitoring of Vestas 2MW turbines from the portfolio of E.ON Climate and Renewables.

"After looking around the market, we finally decided on the service provider from Rheine, Germany. We felt they were best able to meet our high expectations. In cooperation with SSB Service, GmbH, our goal is to develop a manufacturer-independent service for the repair, maintenance, and remote monitoring of our portfolio of two type V80 and V90 MW turbines in Germany, France, and Poland," says Georg Persigehl, Head of Asset Management at E.ON Climate & Renewables for Central Europe.

Ulrich Schomakers, Chief Executive Officer of SSB Service, GmbH, views the cooperation with E.ON as a classic win-win situation for both companies: "We see this partnership, which began with preliminary talks in 2008, as a significant step forward. E.ON plans to invest eight billion euro in the expansion of renewable energies between 2007 and 2011 alone: More than 90% of that will be invested in wind energy. E.ON Climate and Renewables operates turbines with a total installed power capacity of 475 MW in Central Europe alone, a region that includes Germany, Poland, and France."

The first phase of the co-operation between E.ON and SSB Service, GmbH began at the end of 2008 with a large-scale project to build up the necessary service know-how for future repair and maintenance activities. Over a period of 18 months, technicians and engineers from both companies developed a complete strategy for the upkeep of the E.ON Climate and Renewables Vestas wind turbines in Central Europe. Henning Wegner, Service Manager of SSB Service, GmbH in Germany, describes the process: "Over the course of this joint project, we recorded and documented the current technical status of the turbines as well as identified the potential for turbine optimization. The specialists revised their specifications for WTG components on the basis of this information and designed the maintenance procedures, including the requisite logistics, together with the operative service organization."

Having successfully concluded this initial phase, SSB Service, GmbH will now take over the complete service for Vestas 2MW wind turbines no longer covered by manufacturer warranties. Henning Wegner explains "The plan is to gradually conclude service contracts for these WTGs over the next few years. The expertise and the extensive know-how of both companies will not only lend themselves to guaranteeing manufacturer-independent service but also to increase turbine availability in the long term. Together with E.ON Climate and Renewables, we will also concentrate on the further development of critical components in all areas of hydraulics, electrical systems, and mechanical systems."
