AWEA - Attention Regulatory Staff: Danish Symposium to Apply European Wind Power Experience to U.S.

The Danish Green Grid Symposium, which takes place February 22-26 in Copenhagen, is intended to provide participants with insights on key strategic aspects of implementing a secure and smart transmission infrastructure

An upcoming event in one of the world’s leading wind power nations will look at how the European experience in wind power can be put to use in an American context.

The Danish Green Grid Symposium, which takes place February 22-26 in Copenhagen, is intended to provide participants with insights on key strategic aspects of implementing a secure and smart transmission infrastructure. It will also shed light on how to achieve a well functioning market for electricity in order to meet ambitious climate and renewable energy goals without compromising the security of supply.

Denmark has achieved wind power penetration of approximately 20% and is often cited as an example of how wind power can be integrated into grids in large quantities. AWEA noted that the event would be a particularly good fit for utility and state regulatory staff, as well as other stakeholders that might benefit from more exposure to how wind can be a major part of a power system.

Complete with field trips on the agenda, the symposium will address how smart transmission management can pave the way for a high level of renewable energy penetration, the role of markets as a means to maximizing penetration, and other issues.

The sessions will feature American co-chairs who will facilitate discussions and highlight the link between the Danish and European experiences and American challenges.

The event will come a few months after members of the wind industry and some decision makers participated in an offshore wind farm tour in Copenhagen during the December climate change talks there. Participants, which included Governor Tom Vilsack, reported that they found the experience highly informative.

The symposium is invitation-only, but there is space available for qualified participants. For more information, contact Mary Kate Francis at mfrancis@awea.org by January 12.
