UK - Wind energy to power street lights

Small wind turbine to be mounted on lamp posts

Lamp posts could be powered using a device invented by Scots entrepreneur David Gordon. His Windsave company have developed a turbine that can be mounted on lamp posts. And the energy created can be converted within the structure and used to power the lights. The invention comes as councils prepare to turn off street lights in an effort to reduce costs. This has sparked fears from residents over home security with streets being blacked out. But Gordon insists Windsave have the economical and environmental solution. On an average site, the turbine would produce enough electricity to power the streetlamps. But any excess energy can be put back into the "mains" network to supplement general energy demands.

Gordon said: "We are already in discussion with several local councils and an energy company to introduce Windsave Streetlamp projects."
