Global100RE General Assembly elects new executive committee
Bonn, 20 June 2024 (Global100RE) – The Global 100% Renewable Energy Platform (Global100RE) recently held its annual General Assembly in a virtual setting, gathering members from around the globe. Here, the Platform’s new Executive Committee was elected, and the members discussed the future strategy of the Platform, as well as their potential contribution in this collaborative umbrella organization.
The Platform was founded ten years ago as a campaign with the goal to bring 100% renewable energy to the global agenda and make 100% renewable energy the new normal. Today, Global100RE brings together key non-governmental stakeholders working in all areas of energy and climate. Members include non-governmental organisations (NGOs) representing civil society, subnational governments, renewable energy, climate, and science.
Looking back on its ten successful years, during which the idea of a world where all energy comes from 100% renewable sources is championed as realistic by many energy experts. The global climate crisis, geopolitical tensions, the need for energy access for all, and secure energy – all enhance the urgency to step up the 100% RE transition. Global100RE members are conducting a broad range of activities in pursuit of this target from the local to the global level. Over the past ten years, the Platform has directly and indirectly inspired NGOs, governments at all levels, international organisations, businesses, scientists and academia to take ambitious action and to adopt participatory approaches that will lead to an accelerated clean and sustainable energy transition, practically making 100% renewable energy the new normal.
During the Global100RE General Assembly, the Global100RE members elected the new Executive Committee and Co-chairs for a two years term: Stefan Gsänger, World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) Tetsu Iida, Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies (ISEP) Janet Milongo, CAN International Dave Renne, International Solar Energy Society (ISES) Maryke van Staden, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI)
Stefan Gsänger: For us, the Global 100% Renewable Energy Platform has become a key actor and an alliance that brings together the global avant-garde of energy transformation, shaping a long-term vision for the world well beyond 2030. We need such broad and ambitious alliance which focusses on bottom-up approaches and puts the benefits for people and communities at the heart of the transformation.
Tetsu Iida: In the decade since the Global100RE platform was launched, the world has undergone a dramatic transformation. Renewable energy has transitioned from a niche market to a mainstream force, poised to play a pivotal role in addressing the climate crisis and ensuring energy security. Moreover, the goal of achieving 100% renewable energy has shifted from a distant vision to a tangible reality. We are confident that this platform will continue to evolve and contribute to this exciting new chapter.
Janet Milongo: The Global 100% RE platform plays a key role in fostering non-governmental stakeholders collaboration in keeping 100% Renewable Energy at the top of the global agenda and promoting a fully funded, just and equitable transition to 100% Renewable Energy globally, offering a truly people centered, flexible, affordable and sustainable energy system of the future.
Dave Renne: The vision of the International Solar Energy Society is world run by 100% renewable energy, used efficiently and wisely. I have found the Platform to be a powerful partner to spread the word on how such a target can be achieved economically and equitably.
Maryke van Staden: ICLEI’s network of local and regional governments as well as our experts are passionate about sustainable development. We work towards secure, safe and affordable energy, meaning a transition to 100% renewables, where possible. This exciting business model will not only positively impact climate change and resilient infrastructure but will ensure sustainable socio-economic development that underpins a people-centered approach at a time when the just and inclusive transition is imperative. ICLEI manages the global 100% Renewables Cities and Regions Network, serving those who wish to accelerate their clean transition.
