Varco Energy selects GE Vernova to partner on the launch of Native River 57MW/138MWh battery system
The project, named Native River, comes at a highly relevant time for the UK, not only in supporting the UK Government’s move to net zero, but by providing much needed new-build investment into a sector that is integral to managing the supply and demand flow of renewable energy. For example, the 57MW Native River Project could power the equivalent of 37,000 homes in the UK with clean, green power, situated within an historically congested part of the UK electricity grid.
GE Vernova will supply the complete Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for the Native River project. It will be comprised of modular units of GE Vernova’s FLEXInverter, FLEXReservoir and FlexIQ solutions, which will be scaled to meet the capacity of the project and provide balancing and capacity services to the National Grid. Additionally, the company will provide a long-term service agreement, utilising its national services team to deliver maintenance services. Construction commenced in Q3 2023 with connection to the grid expected in early 2024.
Varco, an Adaptogen Capital funded BESS operating company, is on a mission to drive the energy transition to a net-zero future by building flexible energy storage. By helping to integrate renewable energy generation and balance the grid, Varco makes sustainable energy accessible and affordable for all consumers.
James Mills, Director, Varco Energy said: “BESS are critical infrastructure to help balance the intermittent nature of renewable energy generation and break the UK’s reliance on fossil fuels. We are therefore delighted to be partnering with GE on one of our first projects, the 57MW Native River project. At Varco we are committed to investing in assets that will accelerate renewable integration, sustain a resilient grid and drive consumer value in the UK. This project will be the first of many as Varco seeks to deliver on its ambitions.”
Prakash Chandra, President & CEO, GE Vernova’s Solar & Storage Solutions business said: “GE Vernova is delighted to be chosen by Varco in providing a national grid connected Battery Energy Storage System for their Native River project in Liverpool. Our FLEX portfolio being deployed here provides flexible, reliable and intelligent solutions that help solve complex renewable integration and grid challenges while maximizing value for customers. We hope to advance our common mission of providing dispatchable and reliable clean energy that will benefit thousands of people, while contributing to the transition to a clean energy future in the UK.”
