SSE Renewables and Green Rebel complete successful survey works off the East and South coasts

Leading renewable energy developer shows commitment to local supply chain and climate action targets

Leading renewable energy developer, owner and operator SSE Renewables has announced the conclusion of successful geophysical surveys off the South and East coasts of Ireland.

The geophysical surveys have been completed by specialist Cork-based offshore site investigation company Green Rebel. The surveys, which took place over the course of three months from late Spring and into this Summer, were conducted by Green Rebel’s purpose-built survey vessels, the Roman Rebel and the Lady Kathleen.

The geophysical surveys will help provide a clearer understanding of seabed conditions in an area of the Celtic Sea which sits within the recently published Draft Designated Marine Area Plan (DMAP) zone off the coasts of Waterford and Wexford, as well as in the Irish Sea off the East coast where a DMAP is expected to be announced in the coming months.

"We are delighted to have collaborated with local Cork-based company Green Rebel to undertake these geophysical surveys. While we await confirmation of exactly where the first ORESS2 site will be located, the capture of any seabed data within a proposed DMAP zone can only be a positive thing. At SSE Renewables, we’re committed to supporting the local supply chain where possible and companies such as Green Rebel are of great value to a small market seeking to compete on a global scale. We are equally committed to supporting Government achieve its 2030 climate action targets of 5GW of offshore wind by 2030, starting with the next phase of delivery off the South coast," said Bryan O’Connor, Project Manager, SSE Renewables.

"We were delighted to partner with the SSE Renewables team and deliver successful campaigns in the Celtic Sea and Irish Sea. These surveys will play a key role in informing the next stage of sustainable offshore project development as Ireland makes the critical transition from fossil fuels. These campaigns were managed using our own fleet of survey vessels, the Roman Rebel and the Lady Kathleen, both based out of Crosshaven. Our offshore and onshore teams have again demonstrated the capability and expertise that exists here in the Irish supply chain. At every stage of the project, from survey design through to acquisition, processing and reporting, our team has produced high quality data in line with international and industry best practice. SSE Renewables has consistently been an advocate for local supply chain in the Irish market and we look forward to working together in the future," said Dr Jared Peters, Head of Geo at Green Rebel.
