Wind Industry Profile of

WFO publishes its Global Offshore Wind Report for HY1 2022 – Global offshore wind growth largely driven by China

6.8 GW of global offshore wind capacity was installed in HY1 2022 / China alone installed 5.1 GW of new offshore wind capacity in HY1 2022 / 54.9 GW of offshore wind capacity were in operation worldwide by end of June 2022 / 11.9 GW of offshore wind capacity are currently under construction worldwide

World Forum Offshore Wind (WFO) published its Global Offshore Wind Report HY1 2022 today. Globally, 6,759 MW of offshore wind capacity went into operation during the first six months of 2022 compared to 1,627 MW during HY1 2021. This growth was mainly driven by China which installed 5.1 GW of new offshore wind capacity in HY1 2022. Global installed offshore wind capacity reached 54.9 GW by the end of June 2022.

33 new offshore wind farms went into operation (definition: all turbines installed and first power) worldwide during the first half of 2022 of which 25 were installed in China, 5 in Vietnam, 1 in the UK, 1 in South Korea, and 1 in Italy. China expanded its position as the world’s largest offshore wind market by far with 24.9 GW of installed capacity, more than the UK (13.6 GW), Germany (7.7 GW) and the Netherlands (3.0 GW) combined. 45% of the world’s total offshore wind capacity is now installed in China.

Looking at offshore wind farms under construction (definition: first offshore wind foundation installed), China again leads the way. The Chinese offshore wind sector continues to grow with a total capacity of 3,195 MW currently under construction. Taiwan is in second place with a total capacity of 2,505 MW under construction, closely followed by the Netherlands (2,259 MW). The UK and France follow in fourth and fifth place with 1,590 MW and 1,473 MW under construction, respectively. After two years without any offshore wind construction activities Germany began offshore construction works for two projects with a combined capacity of 599 MW.

Gunnar Herzig, Managing Director, World Forum Offshore Wind (WFO): “While China is clearly leading the global offshore wind growth it is excellent to see more and more countries around the world investing in offshore wind energy. The more international offshore wind as an industry becomes, the more robust it will be against economic turbulences. WFO will continue its efforts to promote offshore wind around the world.”
