Statkraft to supply wind power to cement manufacturer OPTERRA

Statkraft, Europe's largest producer of renewable energy, has concluded a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with OPTERRA, one of Germany's leading cement manufacturers, for the supply of green power from onshore wind farms.

OPTERRA, the subsidiary of globally operating CRH Group is thus implementing an important pillar of the company’s sustainability initiative launched in 2021. Between 2022 and 2025, Statkraft will supply around 30 gigawatt hours of wind power annually to the OPTERRA plants in Karsdorf (Saxony-Anhalt), Wössingen (Baden-Württemberg) and Sötenich (North Rhine-Westphalia). The wind power is generated in four wind farms that no longer receive the EEG fixed remuneration. The PPA thus enables continued operation of the wind farms that are no longer subsidised. The amount of electricity supplied corresponds to the average annual power consumption of approx. 7,500 four-person households.

"We are very pleased that we can supply OPTERRA with this demand-based green power PPA to reduce CO2 emissions and achieve their sustainability goals," says Patrick Koch, Head of Origination for Statkraft in Germany.

"At the same time, with this PPA we prevent renewable plants from being taken off the grid. This contributes to achieving the goals of the energy transition," he adds.

"The power purchase agreement to supply the three cement sites with green electricity is an important step for OPTERRA for the future of our operations. With the electricity that we will purchase through Statkraft from 2022, we continue the move towards converting our plant operations to sustainable energies. The agreement gives the sustainability initiative launched this year the necessary tailwind for the implementation of further measures," says Danilo Buscaglia, CEO of OPTERRA.

With the agreement concluded, Statkraft and OPTERRA show how green power PPAs, which are still relatively new in Germany, can concretely support the industry in its efforts towards sustainable products and CO2-neutral value chains.
