Vena Energy Announces the Construction of Japan’s Tallest Wind Turbines at the Groundbreaking Ceremony in Aomori Prefecture

Vena Energy, one of Asia-Pacific’s leading independent power producers (IPP), announced today the commencement of construction for the company’s first wind project in Japan, the “Nakasato” Wind Project in the Aomori Prefecture.

With an installed capacity of 47 MW and a total power sales output of 36 MW, the Nakasato Wind Project will feature wind turbines with a hub height of up to 116.5 meters, making them the tallest wind turbines in Japan to date.

“We are excited to bring our wind energy experience and sustainability practices into Japan with the Nakasato Wind Project, and to support the Government of Japan’s goals in increasing the share of wind energy in the generation mix over the next decade” said Juan Mas Valor, Head of Vena Energy Japan at the groundbreaking and safety prayer ceremony today. “With the Nakasato Project, we look forward to delivering clean green energy, as well as strengthening the community of Nakadomari-machi through infrastructure for essential services and job creation. This project is the result of our close partnerships and cooperation with the communities of the Aomori Prefecture, and we are grateful for the support and guidance of the Nakadomari-machi, the Tohoku Forest Office, Takeuchigumi, and all the organizations that have gathered here today.”

“Nakadomari-machi is a town known for its agriculture, forestry and fisheries, and I am pleased that Vena Energy’s Nakasato Wind Project will be built here, making use of wind as a natural resource and contributing to the prevention of global warming,” said Mr. Toyomitsu Hamadate, mayor of Nakadomari-machi. “We look forward to working closely with Vena Energy and its subsidiary Nippon Wind Energy as good partners of Nakadomari-machi, for the creation of local jobs and the long-term sustainability of the local community”.

“The Nakasato Wind Project is a promising renewable energy project that will provide a total power sales output of 36 MW”, said Mr. Kojiro Shimizu, Director of TOHOKU Branch, Shimizu Corp. “Wind power is an environmentally-friendly way to generate energy, and highly suitable for Nakadomari-machi due to the best wind conditions in Japan. We are grateful and thrilled to be able to contribute to the construction of the Nakasato Wind Project”.

During its construction, the Nakasato Wind Project will create up to 140 jobs locally, and upon its completion will supply clean energy to approximately 22,000 households, while saving 104 million litres of water and reducing an estimated 65,228 tonnes of greenhouse emissions annually.

In Japan, Vena Energy is expanding its wind energy portfolio with 15 projects totaling 844 MW in construction and development, while also operating and maintaining 23 operational solar projects totaling 414 MW. At the end of 2019, Vena Energy’s operational, construction and shovel-ready portfolio in Japan produced 1,157,286 MWh, supplying up to 230,507 Japanese households with renewable energy yearly, while reducing approximately 688,753 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, and saving up to 1,091 million litres of water annually.
