BEAMA and RenewableUK to work together on low-carbon energy system

The trade associations BEAMA and RenewableUK have signed a Memorandum of Understanding agreeing to work more closely together on key issues to help to build the modern, flexible low-carbon energy system which the UK needs to reach net zero emissions.

BEAMA represents manufacturers and providers of energy infrastructure technologies and systems, with over 200 member companies providing products for low carbon energy and environmental services for UK homes, businesses and grid networks.

RenewableUK’s members are building our future energy system using a wide range of technologies including not only wind and marine power but also innovative technologies such as battery storage and renewable hydrogen.

The memorandum commits both trade associations to helping companies based in the UK to develop products and services for the global low-carbon energy market, and forges closer connections across the breadth of the energy supply chain they both represent. We will work jointly though our committees and working groups on Government policy and regulations which affect the development of our supply chain.

Key areas we will focus on include attracting greater investment in the transmission and distribution networks to speed up decarbonisation, and the electrification of heat and transport. We have areas of common interest such as how energy infrastructure and consumer behaviour can better support the net zero transition. We will also co-operate on promoting energy storage, demand side response, flexibility and electricity market reform.

BEAMA’s Chief Executive Dr Howard Porter said: ‘This memorandum of understanding formalises an already emerging relationship between the two associations whereby we are seeing greater opportunity through our collaboration in supporting the breadth of the UK supply chain. The transition to net-zero requires a joined-up approach and when considering the need to drive investment into certain low carbon sectors in the UK we are absolutely stronger together. Investments in low carbon infrastructure will be key to the UK economic recovery from COVID-19 and today’s announcement will help us collaborate further on our positioning and support for UK policy. Our associations are very complementary of each other and ensure good representation across the UK supply chain.

RenewableUK’s Chief Executive Hugh McNeal said: “We’re very pleased to be working in a close partnership with BEAMA on the reforms we need to enable us to build the energy system of the future based on renewables. We need a modern grid that’s fit for purpose to achieve this. Sharing our expertise will benefit the members of both trade associations, as working together we can have a greater impact on the development of Government policies we need to reach net zero emissions. Building a flexible low-carbon system will create valuable opportunities for the hundreds of companies in our supply chain to win contracts here and abroad, as a key part of the green economic recovery after the pandemic”.
