News Release from Brüel & Kjær Vibro GmbH
Wind Industry Profile of
SIL-2 Certification Now Available for the Industry’s Most Innovative Machinery Protection System
These typically include, but are not limited to, radial vibration, axial position, and bearing temperature measurements commonly encountered in machinery protection systems on pumps, motors, compressors, turbines, and other critical rotating and reciprocating machinery.
The system underwent rigorous independent testing and evaluation as part of this third-party certification process to ensure compliance with ISO 61508: Functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems and – more specifically – ISO 61511 which is an adaptation of ISO 61508 to the process industry sectors where the VC-8000 system is used such as power generation, hydrocarbon processing, and others. These sectors typically require full compliance with American Petroleum Institute Standard 670 for Machinery Protection Systems, cybersecurity certification to standards such as IEC 62443, and SIL certification to ISO 61508 and 61511. The VC-8000 is now compliant with the rigorous requirements of all three.
With the ability to address both SIL-1 and SIL-2 functional safety applications, user can now avail themselves of not only the highly reliable machinery protective functions, but the many other innovative aspects of the VC-8000 platform that deliver both machinery protection and state-of-the-art condition monitoring capabilities for turbomachinery and critical assets. Unique capabilities include a built-in flight recorder able to capture comprehensive, high-definition condition monitoring data for up to one full year on an embedded solid-state hard drive, native connectivity to the OSIsoft PI® System which eliminates the need for a separate condition monitoring software storage infrastructure while providing unrivaled process data correlation / integration, and the industry’s simplest architecture which relies on only three modules for machinery protection rather than the dozens of modules used in competing systems, lessening spare parts burdens for customers.
Marcel van Helten, Brüel & Kjær Vibro President, commented on the significance of this achievement: “Our global customers require SIL-1 and SIL-2 for many of their most critical applications, and we are pleased to be able to address these needs as part of our commitment to ongoing improvements and enhancements in our offerings. The VC-8000 combines machinery protection capabilities with optional condition monitoring capabilities, providing valuable insights into machinery health.” Continues van Helten, “While there are other companies offering SIL-rated products, none can match the innovation of our VC-8000 or the value it adds through reduced spare parts, PI integration, built-in flight recorder, and half a dozen additional aspects of this platform that truly set it apart.”
The VC-8000’s SIL certificates are available for download from the SETPOINT® microsite within www.bkvibro.com.
