Germany - Alstom grid to deliver substation for Meerwind Offshore Wind Farm In Germany

The offshore wind energy plants Meerwind Süd and Meerwind Ost will be located in the German North Sea Zone 23 km north of the island of Helgoland and will consist of 80 wind turbines

Alstom Grid and WeserWind GmbH has been awarded a turnkey contract by WindMW GmbH for the delivery of an offshore wind farm substation. Alstom Grid, the global electrical grid expert, is partnering with the Bremerhaven based WeserWind GmbH Offshore Construction Georgsmarienhütte for the steelwork and topside outfitting.

WindMW GmbH plans to construct and operate the offshore wind power farms Meerwind Süd and Meerwind Ost that will guarantee the efficient and ready access to wind energy in Germany. These offshore wind energy plants will be able to feed-in a total power of 288 MW into the public grid, which is sufficient to energize 400,000 households and will save 1 million tons of CO2 emissions annually in comparison to coal-fired power plants.

"With this new success, Alstom Grid demonstrates once again its competence and leading position for offshore grid connections. The complex challenges that are given with its short realisation periods in the offshore business can be best-solved with strong, local partnerships", commented Gerhard Seyrling, Alstom Grid's Regional Vice-President for Central and Eastern Europe, and Russia.

The offshore wind energy plants Meerwind Süd and Meerwind Ost will be located in the German North Sea Zone 23 km north of the island of Helgoland and will consist of 80 wind turbines with a power output of 3,6 MW each.

"We are glad that we have contracted with WeserWind GmbH and Alstom Grid two competent companies. We are convinced that the consortium will deliver the necessary high quality and that they can deliver in the project timeline", commented Jens Assheuer, Managing Director of WindMW.

Alstom Grid together with WeserWind have the full responsibility for the complete scope of the offshore substation to simplify interfaces for the client. Construction will start in autumn 2012 with commercial operation planned by the end of 2013.
