Vietnam - GE signs contract with the Cong Ly Company Ltd, to provide wind turbines to the Mekong Delta
General Electric Co. (GE: News ) signed a contract with Cong Ly Company Ltd, the Vietnamese developer of the Bac Lieu Wind Farm, to provide 10 of its 1.6-82.5 wind turbines and operations and maintenance services for phase one of the wind power project, totaling 16 megawatts of power generation capacity.
Cong Ly Company also has plans for a second phase of the project, which would add up to 120 megawatts of wind power to help resolve the country's chronic power shortages.
The GE wind turbines chosen for this wind energy project feature an 82.5 meter rotor for class III wind conditions. The 1.6-82.5 builds on GE's 1.5-megawatt wind turbine.
With an installed base of more than 2,000 megawatts in Vietnam, GE equipment today supplies approximately 18 percent of the country's power generation capacity.
Located about 200 kilometers southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, the Bac Lieu project will be the first wind farm in the Mekong Delta. It will be designed to protect the environment of the region, which is known as the "rice basket" of the country and accounts for the largest amount of Vietnam's seafood exports.
In 2009, GE established a new manufacturing plant near the seaport city of Hai Phong. The facility produces wind turbine components, and the first wind turbines built there were shipped in May of 2010.
The GE 1.6 - 82.5 Wind turbine.
GE continues to advance its 1.5 MW wind turbine series product line with it's 1.6-82.5 wind turbine. GE's 1.6-82.5 wind turbine provides additional annual energy production relative to the 1.5-82.5 wind turbine. Coupled with industry-leading low cost of electricity, this additional output equates to higher customer value. Focusing on performance, reliability, efficiency, and multi-generational product evolution, GE's 1.6-82.5 wind turbine continues to deliver wind product leadership.
