Germany - Wind turbines with Neodymium and negative environmental impacts are a thing of the past
REpower does not use neodymium in its onshore and offshore wind turbines. All turbine types of the company are based on a gearbox concept with asynchronous doubly-fed generator where the magnet fields in the generator are created electrically. Neodymium is necessary for the production of permanent magnets which are often used in systems with permanent magnet generators and full converter.
The element is part of the metals of rare earths which are mainly exploited in China. In recent days German TV magazines like “Menschen und Schlagzeilen” (“People and Topics”) and “Panorama” of the channel NDR have reported about negative impacts for the environment through the exploitation of neodymium.
The DFIG system, which REpower favors, is characterized by high energy efficiency at low specific costs and has proven in certified measurements that it meets most demanding grid requirements.
