France - Alstom sets its eyes on Texas

Alstom, a French manufacturer of wind turbines is setting its eyes on Texas. Alstom Wind and the National Institute for Renewable Energy (NIRE) have begun testing on the company’s first turbine certified in North America. The company plans to construct a wind turbine assembly facility in Amarillo, Texas.

The company’s Eco 100 and Eco 110 onshore turbines feature a pure torque design, a rotor support concept protecting the gearbox and other drive train components from deflection loads. This helps increase gearbox reliability and operational availability, and lower maintenance costs. The Eco 100 offers 3 MW of power, and is designed for class 2A sites. It’s rotor dia is 200 m, and each blade has independent pitch control.

Alstom has been planning its step onto North American soil since last year when it partnered with NIRE and NREL for research. The certification of its turbine is expected to conclude in the spring. The company’s North American headquarters are in Richmond, Virginia.
