Germany - Siemens announces three major wind energy projects
German manufacturing giant Siemens has announced three major deals to supply wind energy turbines and the company's expertise to projects in Russia, Scotland and the North Sea.
The company announced it has signed a partnership with two Russian companies, Rostechnologii and RusHydro, to establish a joint venture to set up facilities to produce wind turbine components for the Russian market. The unit will also provide sales and service of Siemens wind turbines in Russia and other countries. Russia is planning to install a wind energy capacity of 5000 megawatts by 2020, according to Rene Umlauft, CEO of Siemens' renewable energy division.
Together with Dutch company Pysmian, Siemens will connect the Nordsee-Ost wind farm with mainland Germany at a price tag of 500million EUR. The project will connect the wind farm in the North Sea to the mainland northwest of Hamburg.
Siemens also announced it has received an order from SSE Renewables of Scotland to supply 68 wind turbines for the Griffin wind power project. The plant will have a capacity of 156 megawatts and can generate enough energy to power 80,000 homes.
