UK - Wind energy expands in England
Wind energy capacity in the United Kingdom doubles with the planned addition of 2,000 megawatts of generation capability, the Crown Estate announced. The Crown Estate, a property manager in the United Kingdom, announced plans to add 2 gigawatts of wind energy to meet the energy needs of up to 1.4 million homes in the region. The Crown Estate said it selected five sites for new wind farms that add renewable power resources to the energy grid.
"This announcement shows The Crown Estate's commitment to help develop this maturing sector with a view to driving the U.K. offshore wind energy industry forward and to creating a long-term sustainable energy source for the U.K.," said Rob Hastings, The Crown Estate's director of the marine estate. Agreements for the new wind developments, The Crown Estate said, will be finalized "in the coming weeks."
Construction is scheduled for 2014. The 2 GW addition increases the total installed capacity planned for 2020 to 48 GW.
