Hamburg-based company REpower Systems AG, has agreed to contract out wind turbines to Turkey-based Al Yel Elektrik, a subsidiary of Akuo Energy SAS. This is to be the first time in which REpower will be supplying turbines to the country of Turkey. In the summer of 2011, 44 wind turbines will be supplied for the Geycek wind farm project. The turbines generating a total of 148.28 MW will result in REpower’s “biggest wind farm in Europe to-date.”

Eric Scotto, CEO of Akuo Energy, states, “We are very proud to announce the beginning of the construction of our largest wind farm in Turkey. This project will be one of the largest in Europe; this is a good start for us in a very promising country for the wind industry and the renewable energies.”

In an effort to reduce the amount of environmentally-harmful fossil fuels, a huge focus for Turkey has been on increasing renewable energy resources – particularly wind energy. The future of Turkey is to become even more reliant on natural resources.

Hornung Pedersen, CEO of REpower Systems AG, hopes that this agreement is the first of many to come within the Turkey market. Pedersen said, “Turkey is a wind market with huge potential – experts are speaking of volumes of up to 20,000 MW – which has barely been tapped so far. Turbines with a generating capacity of almost 1,000 MW are already in operation there. In addition, the Turkish Government has announced that it is going to revise the procedures for granting licenses and the remuneration system for renewable energies in 2010. We have outstanding products in the 3.XM series and are happy that customer confidence in the latest generation of turbines is being confirmed by larger and larger orders and projects.”

Suzlon Energy is a major shareholder in REpower systems, a wind turbine manufacturing leader.
