Canada - Prince Edward Island’s wind energy industry receives $2 million from Ottawa for wind energy development
Prince Edward Island’s wind energy industry received a substantial financial boost from the federal government. Peter MacKay, minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, confirmed the government will invest $2 million over the next three years in the three-year-old Wind Energy Institute of Canada, based in Summerside. "There’s been a great deal of speculation, indeed even some fear mongering, about the expiration of the funding for the institute," said Mackay. "Let me say, it was not going to happen."
The federal agency and the federal Natural Resources Department will kick in $1 million each to support the institute, while the provincial government will invest $855,000 over the three years. As well, MacKay announced that Holland College in Summerside will soon offer a new training program for wind turbine service technicians.
