50Hertz to build power-to-heat unit in Germany

50Hertz and EVH GmbH (EVH), a company of the Stadtwerke Halle group, are collaborating to build a power-to-heat plant. The PtH unit will have a capacity of 40 megawatts (MW) and will already be operational by the end of the year. The investment of up to 15 million euros is made by 50Hertz. Between the two companies, a so called Redispatch-contract was signed.

When the wind farms in the north-east of Germany are generating too much electricity during strong wind episodes and it cannot immediately be consumed locally or be transported to a more remote destination, wind turbines must be curtailed to protect the power lines and substations against overloads.
