Wind Power: Record Production in Denmark
As the preliminary figures of Energinet show, Denmark set a new record in wind power production on Sunday (2019-09-15). The first autumn storms swept across the country and hit the country's wind turbines mainly on the west coast.
This led to several records: For the first time, the wind turbines delivered more wind power around the clock in the course of 24 hours than the Danish total consumption accounted for. The strong winds contributed to covering 130% of the country's electricity needs from midnight to midnight, said transmission grid operator Energinet.
Early Sunday morning between 2 and 3 a.m., up to 60 percent more electricity was produced than the Danish market demanded. The surplus electricity was sold abroad. This broke the previous record of Whitsun (9 June 2019), when the turbines produced 52 percent more than consumers needed.
"Ten years ago, wind power was only able to cover about one fifth of demand, so it's insanely strong when we had higher production than consumption not just a few hours but 24 hours a day," explained Carsten Vittrup of Energinet.
