China Plans Even More Wind Complexes

The Chinese government has approved several wind projects, including the construction of 24 offshore wind farms off the coast of Jiangsu Province and a 6 gigawatt wind complex to power the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The bigger, the better - this is the motto the Chinese government is currently using when it comes to wind energy. China already ranking first among the countries with the highest expansion figures, will continue to invest massively in wind energy. Various projects have now again been approved for this purpose, according to local media reports.

Off the coast of the Jiangsu province, 24 offshore wind farms with a total capacity of 6.7 gigawatts are to be built by the end of 2020. According to The Maritime Executive, they will be developed by a number of utilities including the China Energy Group, the China General Nuclear Power Corp., the China Huaneng Group and the State Power Investment Corp. In the Jiangsu Province, 56 wind farms with a total capacity of 8.6 GW are already in operation.

In addition, China plans to build a 6-gigawatt wind complex to power the 2022 Winter Olympics. This will be a subsidy-free wind farm in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia, according to GreenTech Media. Investments of more than 6.3 billion dollars are planned for this wind cluster.

“After the project is put into production, it could deliver about 18.9 billion kilowatt-hours of green electricity to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region every year to help control air pollution in Beijing and the surrounding areas,” said the State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) in a press announcement this month.
