Trump Administration: Energy Efficiency No Longer Necessary
It is only the latest step away from environmental and climate protection measures and totally fits Trump's previous actions. When you read the media reports though, you still have to hold your breath: New methods of harvesting natural ressources at home are currently ensuring that the United States no longer has to import great amounts of natural gas or oil. Therefore it is no longer necessary to use them efficiently, according to the Department of Energy.
This action undermines decades of efforts to protect the climate and improve energy efficiency, for example in the automotive industry. The Department of Energy believes that measures such as fracking, which has opened up shale oil reserves, gives "the United States more flexibility than in the past to use our oil resources with less concern".
Although the memo goes on to say that, despite the increase in oil reserves, the Department still believes in the need to "use energy wisely", it does not specify what measures should be taken to this end.
