ABB is modernizing electricity link between Sweden and Denmark

Swiss company ABB will modernize the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link between the two Scandinavian countries Sweden and Denmark and provide a new control and protection system for around 30 million dollars.

ABB will upgrade the existing control and protection system for the Konti-Skan high-voltage DC transmission line with the latest ABB Ability MACH technology.

The Konti-Skan transmission line was constructed 52 years ago as the first connection between Sweden and Denmark to make electricity exchange in a common grid easier. The installation of ABB's latest MACH control and protection system extends the lifetime of the HVDC link and increases the power availability, reliability and efficiency of the network through advanced digitization.

“We are delighted to implement our latest ABB Ability MACH control technology to upgrade this historic HVDC transmission link, facilitating more energy trading and exchange of renewables, bringing clean, reliable power supply to consumers”, said Claudio Facchin, President of ABB’s Power Grids division.
