Sweden - Siemens secures order for the largest offshore wind farm in the country

Nordic Generation has awarded Siemens Power Generation (PG) a contract for the construction of Lillgrund in Öresund near Malmö, which will be the largest offshore wind farm in Sweden. The project’s installed capacity of 110 megawatts (MW) has the potential to meet the electricity demand of approximately 60,000 Swedish households. The Lillgrund wind farm is scheduled to start commercial operation in late 2007. “With the Lillgrund order, we underline our leading position in the offshore wind-business, which is gaining importance for the near future,” said Andreas Nauen, head of the wind power division of Siemens PG. In 1991, the company delivered its first offshore wind park in Vindeby, Denmark. The company also constructed the Nysted offshore wind farm in Denmark, the largest in the world, with an installed capacity of 166 MW.

Siemens PG’s wind power division also recently signed a contract for another offshore wind farm, for the supply of 25 units of its 3.6 MW wind turbines, for the Burbo Banks offshore wind farm in Liverpool Bay on the British west coast, which is scheduled for commissioning in fall 2007. Siemens PG will supply and install 48 of its 2.3 MW Mk II wind turbines. The Siemens scope includes turbine delivery, electrical infrastructure, installation, and a five-year service and maintenance agreement. Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution will provide equipment for the project’s 33 kV and 138 kV-offshore transformer station.

The Power Generation Group (PG) of Siemens AG is one of the premier companies in the international power generation sector. In fiscal 2005 (which ended September 30), Siemens PG posted sales amounting to approximately EUR8.1 billion and received new orders totaling EUR11 billion. Group profit amounted to EUR951 million. On September 30, 2005, PG had a work force of approximately 33,500 worldwide. Further information at: www.siemens.com/powergeneration.
