Vattenfall wins Danish Near Shore Wind tender

Today it was announced that Vattenfall has won the Danish Near Shore Wind Tender (DNS). September 1st , Vattenfall submitted the final bid for the two sites Vesterhav Syd and Vesterhav Nord and the outcome of the tender is based on Vattenfall delivering the lowest bid of 0,475 kr/kWh. Prior to construction start, Vattenfall needs a final approval from the Danish government.

Magnus Hall, Vattenfall‘s CEO, comments: "This is excellent news. We have worked extremely hard with this offer and our efforts have been rewarded. This is a major step for our company in respect of our sustainability aspirations. We previously announced that we wish to invest EUR 5 billion in sustainable development over the next five years and increase our wind power production in all countries where we are present". Hall continues: "Denmark is a core market for us. We have been involved in wind power in the Denmark for almost 20 years now and this is an important achievement for our portfolio, as it enables us to provide sustainable energy for  375,000 households.”

“With our bid for DNS we have demonstrated that we are able to reduce the costs of offshore wind faster than had been expected, only a few years ago. This again proves that renewable energy is going to be competitive and Denmark and Vattenfall is in the lead when it comes to renewable energy. We contribute to this growth and we will continue to do so for the next few decades”, says Gunnar Groebler, Head of Vattenfall Wind. With DNS Vattenfall will be the biggest owner and operator of wind in Denmark.

As a result of the tender, Vattenfall will now develop two wind farms with a total capacity of 350 MW in the offshore area outside Hvide Sande and Thyborøn on the west coast of Jutland.

Next steps

Country Manager for Denmark Ole Bigum Nielsen is also very pleased with the result: “We’re very much looking forward to DNS  providing another opportunity to spearhead Denmark’s leading position within offshore technology fulfilling the ambition to make the North Sea the Energy Valley of the world. Partnering with the leading suppliers in the world we’re expect the new installations to create thousands of jobs. And the near coast locations offers new opportunities with regards to technology ensuring that also the environmental concerns are taken care of.“

Vattenfall will, following the announcement from  the Minister, initiate the final preparations for the establishment of the wind farm. This includes procurement of main components and services (e.g. wind turbines, foundations and cables, installation vessels), optimization and final design of the Wind Farm, with the aim to start construction in 2019 and produce the first power in 2020.
