Major Milestone in the Meerwind Project in The Windfair Newsletter
Bremen/Bremerhaven: The work is finally done after eighteen months; all 80 monopiles for the Meerwind Süd | Ost project were delivered back in April this year, and the last TP or transition piece has now left the Cuxhaven production hall. More than 85,000 tonnes of steel has gone into the project, with more than 48,000 square metres in surface area coated in a specialised offshore coating system.
"We are well within schedule after sending the last transition piece on its way, and that's a major milestone," said WindMW GmbH CEO Jens Assheuer from Bremerhaven. "Working with AMBAU GmbH turned out to be very smooth due to the short distances involved, and turbine installation can now begin according to plan. The wind farm's internal offshore cabling has been laid, so we can meet our objective of completing installation by the end of 2013."
This will mark the completion of one of the first commercial offshore wind farms in the North Sea – 80 wind turbines generating up to 288 megawatts of power for the national grid, providing around 360,000 households with clean energy while saving a million tonnes of CO2 a year compared to coal-fired power plants.
This will hardly remain the only offshore project for WindMW GmbH, a joint venture between Blackstone Group and Windland Energieerzeugungs GmbH, as the extensive experience gained will pay off in future offshore wind farm projects already in the pipeline.
