Wind to be harnessed at Ness Point, Lowestoft/UK

Country's largest wind turbine is assembled

England's most easterly point is set to be transformed for good today, as the country's largest wind turbine is assembled at Ness Point, Lowestoft. The bottom section of the structure, which will measure 126m to the top of the blades, is already in place. Today, the middle section of the 80m tower, the 92m diameter blades, hub, nose cone and housing for the generator gearbox and electrical controls are due to be assembled. It should provide a spectacle for onlookers as the multi-million-pound project being undertaken by SLP Energy is put in place with the help of a 108m crane. The turbine, which will be taller than Norwich Cathedral and nearly as tall as Blackpool Tower, should be completed today. The blades should turn by the end of next week, and it will begin producing clean, green, renewable power for the National Grid – enough to meet the needs of 1500-1600 homes – next month, so helping in the battle against global warming.
