+++ 116 Gigawatt added in 2023 equaling 12,5% growth +++ China installed around 75 Gigawatt, two thirds of new capacity +++ Wind power generates 10% of global electricity
Investments in wind energy in Europe more than doubled in 2023 compared to 2022, driven by record financing of offshore wind projects. An easing of inflationary pressures, greater certainty in electricity markets, and improved tariff indexation by Governments created a more favourable investment climate.
The EU built 17 GW of new wind energy in 2023, slightly up on 2022 – and more than ever in a single year in fact. But it’s not enough to reach the EU’s 2030 targets. The EU should be building 30 GW of new wind every year between now and 2030. The actions set out in the EU Wind Power Package and European Wind Charter will help increase the annual build-out – national implementation is key. Wind was 19% of all electricity produced in Europe’s last year.
The World Wind Energy Association is pleased to announce that German wind turbine manufacturer ENERCON has joined the Association as a Corporate Member.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) Board of Directors announced yesterday a €5bn counter-guarantee scheme for wind energy manufacturing. This is the EIB’s key action in the EU Wind Power Package. The counter-guarantees will improve access to finance for wind turbine manufacturers, providing them with the support they need to help boost Europe’s energy security and competitiveness.
New report outlines route for global supply chain resilience and growth, based on industry and government cooperation. Bottlenecks in the global wind industry supply chain could leave the world with only three-quarters of the wind energy installations needed for a 1.5°C pathway by 2030, i.e. a 650 GW gap to meet climate targets.
"The benefits derived from these projects moving forward cannot be overstated."
WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson attended the Turkish Wind Energy Congress on 7 and 8 November. The Turkish wind industry has big ambitions. The Government wants lots more wind, not least to strengthen Turkey’s energy independence. They need to get their auctions right and keep supporting their supply chain.
In the presence of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands the 10 Energy Ministers of the North Seas Energy Cooperation (NSEC)** met in The Hague yesterday. They agreed a new NSEC Action Agenda for the build-out of offshore wind. This Agenda aims among other things to help strengthen Europe’s wind energy supply chain. In the same vein NSEC also welcomed the EU Commission’s Wind Power Package and pledged to actively engage in its implementation.
"This is a major step forward for Michigan, and we want to recognize Governor Whitmer and the Michigan Legislature for their leadership on these critical energy issues", said the ACP.
While in the first half of 2022, 29,8 Gigawatt were added, the world installed 41,2 Gigawatt in the same period of 2023, 38% more than in 2022.
The U.S. now has over 243 gigawatts (GW) of operating clean power, a new report by the ACP states.
2023 has set new records in the PPA market with 7.8 GW of renewable capacity secured to date. But there are still barriers that need to be removed.
The 2.6 GW offshore wind project will provide numerous economic benefits to Virginia.
According to a new ACP report, hydrodynamic effects that occur naturally in the ocean and from climate change are likely to dwarf any possible effects that offshore wind turbines have on the flow of ocean water.
“These projects will create more than 8,000 jobs and spur the development of new supply chains, attracting businesses and fostering innovation that will stimulate economic growth, and enhance the overall competitiveness of the state," the American Clean Power Association (ACP) said.
The Package proposes a Wind Power Action Plan which sets out 15 actions to strengthen Europe’s wind energy industry.
“Offshore wind’s untapped potential on the West Coast could be the key to achieving California’s ambitious climate and reliability goals while supporting regional jobs and community opportunities,” said Molly Croll, Pacific Offshore Wind Director, American Clean Power Association. “We welcome the expertise and dedication of CCOWL members to strengthen our collective mission of meeting California’s emissions-free future.”
The Manifesto calls for a dedicated Electrification Action Plan in the first 100 days of the incoming European Commission’s mandate.
