Geneva, the 28th June 2011. SGS, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is pleased to announce that the SGS Wind Energy Technology Center (WETC) was opened on June 13, 2011, in Tianjin, China in response to the high demand for full-scale testing of rotor blades on an international footing and in China.

The new SGS Wind Energy Technology Center is located in the Tianjin Economic and Technological Development Area (TEDA), North China’s center of processing and manufacturing industries and springboard for the commercialization of high-tech achievements. The opening ceremony was a high-profile event attended by Mr. Yang Xiao Yong, Director of Tianjin Bureau Quality and Technical Supervision, Mr. Zhang Jun, Vice Director of the management committee of TEDA, Mr. Chris Kirk, CEO of SGS, Mr. Helmut Chik, COO of SGS China and Hong Kong, as well as Mr. Richard Shentu, Managing Director of SGS-CSTC.

During the opening of this groundbreaking center, attendees had an ideal opportunity to learn more about the renewable energy sector, the WETC and Rotor Blade Testing from the prestigious guests present at the event. Mr. Chris Kirk, CEO of SGS said, “In recent years, China has leapt forward to become the world's largest developer of wind energy. Providing a clean and safe energy source, wind energy is expected to replace nuclear energy in China as the most substantial of energy sources. The Chinese government’s investment and policy support in the wind energy industry is obvious to all. It also demonstrates the government’s wholehearted pursuit of a green economy and its determination to achieve sustainable development.” Furthermore, he stated, “SGS has been listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the second consecutive year, and sustainable development has always been one of our most important values. It is the driving force behind our innovations in energy-saving,
low-carbon, wind energy and other clean energies.”

In addition, Mr. Richard Shentu, Managing Director of SGS-CSTC, said in his speech that “SGS will now be able to provide best-in-class testing services for blade manufactures in Tianjin and throughout Asia in an accessible and efficient way. This also contributes to the R&D escalation for wind turbine generator systems and components in China and throughout Asia.”

The opening of the SGS Wind Energy Technology Center (WETC) in Tianjin, China demonstrates SGS’s commitment to first-rate expertise and to satisfy the high demand for large-scale rotor blade testing in Asian and global markets.
