BRAZIL - 441 projects submitted to the auction for wind power generation
The Brazilian government admitted 441 candidates to participate in the first major wind power auction. With this initiative they seek to increase the wind farms and improve the price of this renewable source. The interest generated sparked a new call by November, only for wind energy. However, the minister of Mines and Energy, said that what comes out of this tender will be well below the 13,000 MW of supply received.
He highlighted that the large number of companies involved suggest that the auction will be a success, although he admitted that it is impossible to accept most of the projects as one of the Government's objectives is to lower the price of this energy source.
Brazil experienced a severe energy crisis in 2001 that forced it to think of expanding and diversifying the energy matrix. It now has 386 MW generated by wind energy, will add 427 MW by the end of this year and another 684 in 2010, with projects already approved. In past years, a study found that the wind potential of the territory is 143,000 MW.
Today, over 80% of the 105,000 MW of installed power in the country comes from hydro generation, and the price of megawatt/hour is approximately U 50 for that power, while the megawatt of wind power costs around U 135, according to the latest tenders awarded.
The government said that they do not want to commit to very expensive generation, and that in August they will define the maximum price for the sale of power generated by the future farm, which will be distributed by eleven of the 27 Brazilian states, 72% are concentrated in the northeast region which presents the strongest winds.
The winners of the auction shall sell electricity at the fixed price starting in July 2012, with a contract period of twenty years.
