Uruguay - Official opening of the “Sierra de Caracoles” wind farm

The wind farm with six wind turbines has an installed capacity of 10 MW

The “Sierra de Caracoles” wind farm, owned by the UTE (Electric Plants and Transmission National Management), was officially inaugurated with the presence of the country’s president and senior executives of government.

The wind farm, located in the Department of Maldonado, began operations in late 2008, with six wind turbines, which together have an installed capacity of 10 MW. Currently, there are 4 operating wind turbines, since the last 2 are in maintenance, to be reinstated soon.

The National Interconnected System will receive the power input produced by this wind farm. The same is being operated by the company Eduinter SA, through a contract for 2 years. At the same time, it is expected that in less than a year, the wind farm may double its generating capacity to 20 MW.

It is recalled that the construction and operation of this wind farm was made possible through a cooperative agreement between the Uruguayan government and the Spanish government. In addition, it is part of a government strategy that aims to achieve an installed capacity of 300 MW in the country by 2015.
