Kenya - Firm seeks approval to generate wind and solar power

Following complaints by households and Kenya’s manufacturers over high electricity costs, a local firm wants approval to produce power from solar and wind and deliver it to the national grid. If set up, the new generator could reduce Kenya’s strained capacity.

In April, the Government announced new incentives to boost independent power production from renewable sources. They included lower tariffs at the interconnection point when private generators load to the national grid.

On Thursday, the Kenya Association of Manufacturers appealed to the government to increase the capacity of power generated to meet the growing demand by industrialists and homes by licensing more producers.

The new feed-in tariff announced in April by the Government applies to independent power producers such as Power Technology Solutions Limited, the local firm that is planning to set up a power plant to produce and sell power generated from solar and wind.

Companies generating power from wind, solar, biomass, small hydro plants, fuel wood and tidal waves will benefit from the support.
