UK - London-based renewables developer Novera Energy plans construction in 2009 on an 11-turbine wind farm in Scotland

Wind farm gets approval as country says its on track to meet its 31 percent renewable goal by 2011. London-based renewables developer Novera Energy said it plans to start construction in 2009 on an 11-turbine wind farm in Scotland.

The news comes as Scotland’s Energy Minister Jim Mather said the country will meet its ambitious target for a third of electricity demand from renewable sources by 2011. Mather estimated that Scotland has more than 60 gigawatts of potential renewable energy available—10 times the country’s peak demand.

To reach the renewable requirement, Scotland would have to generate 5.5 GW from renewables by 2011. The country has 2.8 GW of renewable energy capacity installed and 2.5 GW of renewable projects in the pipeline for government approval, Mather said.

Wind power is currently the fastest growing renewable in Scotland's market. But Scotland’s energy grid might not be able to handle the additional projected generation, analysts said this week.

Novera received the go-ahead from Scottish authorities this week for its newest wind farm, which is expected to produce between 22 and 27 megawatts of power starting in 2010. The farm’s energy generation depends on the turbine manufacturer that Novera selects, the company said.

Novera has set a goal of producing 250 MW of wind power by 2011, up from its current 15 MW of installed wind power. The company has announced plans for six wind farms that would add 124 MW, including the recent project.

Novera generates renewable power at 58 sites across the U.K., with a total capacity of 122 MW, including 87 MW generated by landfill gas. In addition to wind, the company generates 16 MW from hydropower and 4 MW from an industrial site.

The 11-turbine Glenkerie Wind Farm is planned to be in southeast Scotland, near Biggar, Scottish Borders. ScottishPower has offered for Novera to connect to the grid, the company said.

It’s the second Novera wind farm approved in Scotland this year. In May, Novera received approval for the 40-46 MW A'Chruach Wind Farm in Argyll, Scotland.
