In the first half of 2024, Chinese authorities approved 9,000 MW of new coal projects, marking an 83% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. However, a review by Global Energy Monitor and the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air indicates that over 41,000 MW of new coal capacity construction began in the same period. Despite this, the level of new and revived coal projects is lower than in the past two years, indicating a possible slowdown in proposals. Additionally, Chinese coal generation dropped by 7% from June 2024 compared to the previous year. Since the beginning of 2023, China has added over 400,000 MW of new wind and solar capacity, and hydro generation has recovered after years of drought. The report urges the Chinese government to end support for new medium- and long-term coal supply contracts, set coal reduction targets, and continue expanding clean energy initiatives.
